It is not surprising to know that house break-ins are on the rise again. This usually happens when economy is fluctuating at a downward scale or at a stand-still resulting many people losing their jobs at lightning speed.  This is not to say that the rate of house break-ins accelerated due to poor economy but if we look at statistic it clearly shows a correlation between them. When there isn’t enough job available, the “only” way to put food on the table is to steal or scam for that matter.

Do not create opportunity for burglars to strike your home. Be proactive and take preventive home security measures to safe guard your home, valuable assets, and most importantly lives.

Tips on How To Prevent House Break-ins

Dos

  • Lock All Doors: If you like to keep your front door open, do lock the gate even if you are at home. Burglars can slip in unaware while you are busy preparing a meal in the kitchen or taking an afternoon nap. Lock up every time you go out, even if it is only for a few minutes.
  • On Vacation: When you go on vacation, either have your neighbor pick up your newspapers or stop the subscription which is the better option.
  • Alert Police: Report suspicious characters to the police. Some burglars check out an area before they strike and seeing policemen in the vicinity may deter them from committing a crime.
  • Home Security System: Consider installing an electronic home security system. Talk to neighbors and friends who have decided on which one to install, learn to use it properly. Seeing false alarms is annoying and people will stop pay attention after a while.

Don’ts

  • Peepholes: Peepholes are useful for identifying visitors before opening the door. Do not open the door if you can’t see who it is.
  • Post It Notes: Do not leave notes at the door for family members or the repair man. This only signals to burglars that the house is empty.
  • Spare Keys: Do not leave your spare keys in place like mailboxes, under door mats, or under potted plants.
  • Key Chains: Do not place identification tags (i.e. home address or phone number) on your keys or key chains. It will be a great help for burglars if you lose your keys.
