Watering Potted Plants: From the Top or Bottom?

Both methods are fine, you can water your potted plants from the top or bottom. Here are some basic tips on watering plants:

To Water Plants from the Top: This is by far the most common practice.

  • Use a watering can with a small spout and keep as much water off the leaves as possible.
  • The point is to wet the soil for the roots to absorb water—the foliage does not need it.
  • Add water until some seeps through the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot.
  • Discard any remaining water after an hour.

To Water Plants from the Bottom: I won’t recommend this if your potted plants are big and heavy.

  • Place the pot in a bucket filled with water that reaches to just below the rim of the pot.
  • When the soil at the top becomes moist, remove the pot and drain it.
