Which plants need plenty of water?
- Actively growing plants
- Plants with delicate looking and thin leaves
- Plants placed near windows or in hot rooms
- Plants with large leaves that transpire a lot of water
- Plants with plenty of healthy roots in the pot
- Plants grown in relatively small pots
- Plants grown in free-draining potting mixes, including peat-based mixtures
- Plants in clay pots
- Plants with budding leaves and young flowers
What plants need less water?
- Resting plants without buds or flowers
- Plants with thick, leathery leaves
- Succulent plants (e.g. cacti) that are naturally adapted to store water for future use
- Recently repotted plants whose roots have not penetrated through all the mixture
- Plants grown in a shady place
- Plants grown in water-retentive potting mixtures, including soil-based mixtures
