Which plants need plenty of water?

  • Actively growing plants
  • Plants with delicate looking and thin leaves
  • Plants placed near windows or in hot rooms
  • Plants with large leaves that transpire a lot of water
  • Plants with plenty of healthy roots in the pot
  • Plants grown in relatively small pots
  • Plants grown in free-draining potting mixes, including peat-based mixtures
  • Plants in clay pots
  • Plants with budding leaves and young flowers


What plants need less water?

  • Resting plants without buds or flowers
  • Plants with thick, leathery leaves
  • Succulent plants (e.g. cacti) that are naturally adapted to store water for future use
  • Recently repotted plants whose roots have not penetrated through all the mixture
  • Plants grown in a shady place
  • Plants grown in water-retentive potting mixtures, including soil-based mixtures
  • Plants grown in plastic and glazed clay pots
  • Plants with thick, fleshy roots or water-storing section on their roots
