Three decades ago, almost all kitchens in any home look identical. Reason being is to be practical not fashionable or adding your personality to it. While practicality is key when decorating your kitchen, you can still play with colors to enliven your kitchen. After all, most of our waking time is spent in the kitchen either eating, cooking, family gathering, or even used for multiple functions like an office for those work-at-home individuals.

There two ways (but not limited to) how you can enliven your kitchen. Either as an after thought when your kitchen is fully furnished or plan from the start. Just remember, there is no wrong way. It is your kitchen so add your personality to it.

Colors For Your Kitchen Walls

Traditional Colors: Some common kitchen colors are blue (cool and refreshing), yellow (sunny and bright) and white (clean and fresh).

Dark and Vivid: If you get a lot of natural light in the kitchen, go for warm colors such yellow or orange.

Light and Subdued: On the other end, if your kitchen is dark, go for cool and muted colors such as light gray or white.

Colors To Compliment Your Kitchen With…

Kitchen Cabinet and Flooring: Much of the kitchen area is taken up by the cabinet and the floor, so use these as starting points for your color scheme in the kitchen. If you opt for warm colors, intersperse some areas with whites and neutrals to balance the intensity.

Colorful Kitchen Appliances: Appliances are now more colorful. An orange microwave may seem outstanding at the store’s display shelf but do consider whether it will be practical in the long run. Colorful appliances may seem out of place if you decide to change your color scheme in the future.

Dark-colored Kitchen Floor: The kitchen floor must be resistant to heavy traffic and spills. Go for a darker color if you can’t imagine yourself mopping the floor each time after you cook. Floor color can match or contrast with cabinet colors.

Colors for bedroom can work wonders, especially when they serve dual purposes—to coax you to sleep at night and to perk you up first thing in the morning. Here are some basic bedroom colors ideas on how to utilize them to your advantages and benefits:

Basic Bedroom Colors Ideas

Bedroom Wall Colors: A bright yellow may seem a cherry choice but seeing it in large amount over a long period of time, especially in a room you relax in, may not be a great idea. Go for golden yellow instead as it symbolizes sunrise or green for a more soothing effect. Pink and peach, if they aren’t too girly for you, are also warm and inviting.

Wardrobe Colors: Cabinets take up quite a bit of space in the bedroom, so only go for dark colored wardrobes if you have a well-lit room. Otherwise you may end up having a gloomy feel in the bedroom.

Bedsheets Colors: Bedsheets can serve as a focal point of your bedroom. Choose one that will set the color scheme for the bedroom. If you use a comforter, buy a reversible duvet cover for versatility. If your bed is big enough, throw in extra pillow in coordinated shades for cuddly comfort and extra strokes of colors.

Most people would not regard lighting as part of bedroom color scheme nevertheless it does create an impact on the overall feel if you choose the wrong lighting color. So avoid lights that are too bright in the bedroom. Go for bulbs with a lower wattage emitting warm yellow lights. This will give a more soothing ambience to the bedroom.

When choosing colors for your living room, keep in mind it is a place to entertain guests as well as a get-together area for your family. Not only it has to look good but needs to have a comfortable feel to it.

How To Choose The Right Color For Your Living Room

Cozy Feel: If you want a cozy room, use warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow. For a more spacious and elegant look, opt for cool colors such as green and blue, or even white.

Connecting the Room: Living rooms are often connected to dining rooms and kitchens. Knowing where to start and finish the color scheme between each part can be tricky. One way is to paint a feature wall in an area between two sections as a color break. Or you could use a gradual progression of colors from one area to another.

Ceiling: Do no neglect ceilings. Use another shade of the wall color to paint the ceiling. If you want the ceiling to look higher, paint it two shades lighter.

Go Neutral: The ideal wall color is actually a neutral shade that will go with your furniture. And neutral doesn’t mean beige. Every color has a neutral shade, so go for one that you think is the most versatile.

If you still can’t decide which paint colors for the living that will match you personality, the easiest way is to look at your wardrobe. Usually the colors that dominate will probably be the ones that they are most comfortable with.

Here are things you can do to create a serene home to retreat to after a hectic day at work:

Colors: Play with colors. Pale blues are soothing, evoking images of blue skies and calming waters. Neutral shades of brown add cozy touches and make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Green is the color of nature, and it too relaxes the mind.

Accessories: Place items that will evoke sweet memories and pleasant thoughts around the house. Make space for photographs of loved ones, meaningful quotes and fresh fragrant flowers.

Water Features: The trickling sound of water bring one closer to nature, so you may want to consider buying an indoor water fountain. Plants rocks, and natural wood accents are also helpful in creating an environment akin to nature.

Clutter: Be careful not to get carried away when buying knick knacks for your home. Clutter and mess cause stress. If there are things you do not use anymore, store it away or thrash it.

Simplicity: It’s back to the basics for busy working professionals. People are staying away from unnecessary frills and searching for the simpler life we knew as children. Use softer bedspreads, simple furniture and basic appliances, and you won’t have to sweat over anything too complicated. Life becomes less demanding and more carefree.

Doing up the nursery room involves making the first few decisions for your precious one. Here are some decorative tips to help you get started on your baby’s first room:

Start with the basics—a crib or cradle for the baby to sleep in, storage for clothing and baby supplies, and a changing table.

Consider the space you have. If it’s a small room, look for multifunctional furniture such as a dresser with an edge on top that can also serve as a changing table.

Baby years are short, so you may want to consider hand-me-downs from family and friends. Also check out secondhand furniture at garage sales but do make sure to reject anything that has loose joints and holes.

When it comes to decorating the room, again remember to plan ahead. Curesy wallpaper may not be appropriate when your three-year-old starts to play with toy trucks and guns.

To change the look of a room without spending too much, consider changing drawer knobs, adding colorful curtains, and painting/pasting borders on the walls.

If you are thinking of repainting the walls, do it in way in advance to avoid irritating your baby with plain fumes.

Bathrooms need not to be sterile and purely functional. Add your personal touches to them and give them some characters. Here are a few simple ideas to help you to transform your plain bathroom into a mini spa area:

Decorative Tips For Your Bathrooms

Accessory: Practical items can be used as accessories to save space and money. Some shower gel and shampoo come in pretty bottles and you can place them in a wicker basket for a pleasant touch.

Towel: Towels can make a difference too. Hang colorful towels on the towel rack to add some life to the bathroom.

Candle: Scented candles are lovely for a bathroom. Get them in different colors and place them in different corners of the bathtub if you have one. The space between the cabinet and the ceiling are great for little decorative items.

Plant: If your bathroom has sufficient natural light, get some potted plants and place them on a counter top to add some greenery to the space.

Mirror: A mirror can be another decorative piece. These days, mirrors have gone beyond the typical round and square pieces. Get one that is out of the ordinary and the mirror may become the centerpiece of the bathroom.

Motif: There are plastic adhesives with motifs on them that are widely available in stores. You can use them to add color to your bathroom by pasting them on plain tiles or on cabinets. Just be careful not to choose anything cutesy, as you will grow tired of it as time goes by.

Art: There’s no stopping you from hanging art in the bathroom. Inexpensive prints in attractive frames will do just fine.

Each material possesses different properties to create varying effects for draping, ruffling, pleating, and so on.

Tips on Picking the Right Material for your Windows:

Fabric: Ask yourself how often you’ll be raising or lowering the shades for proper light control before determining the ideal fabric.

Velvet and damask drape more fluidly than crisper fabrics.

Silks and fine quality fabric provide a pricey, natural look.

Cotton is strong and easy to care for, but can shrink, stretch or wrinkle easily.

Acetate is smooth, silky, and drapes well, but is weak and easily damaged by the sun.

Natural Materials: Although woven grass, wood, and metal are easy to maintain nevertheless always check out the caring and handling instructions before buying.

Roman shades such as woven grass, reeds, or wood link the indoors and outdoors, providing unity and cohesion.

Sleek metal blinds add vibrancy and chic, and are more affordable and functional.

Dressing up windows can be fun and rewarding. Not only it can transform our home dramatically, it also has a therapeutic after effect—elevates or soothes our mood. But first, we must understand some basic principles to achieve the outcome we want. Here are some window treatment tips to make it work for us.

Working With Lines

Window shapes can be “altered,” “elongated,” and “widened” through illusion.

If you have a square window, add height by mounting panels above the window border or let the draperies puddle to the floor to lengthen the look.

Vertical lines add height, dignity, and formality. They also draw the eyes to the ceiling.

Horizontal lines are more causal and relaxing.

Curved lines like valences throw a softening touch.

Working With Colors

Colors survey the window and areas around it. Sweep your eyes over the entire room.

Room too small? Blend soft, light, and cool colors in with similarly colored walls.

Dark, warm, and contrasting colors draw attention to the window. Used in large quantities, they may be overwhelming.

Colors can determine your mood. Neutrals impart a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, while cheery colors increase the energy quotient.

Reserve the red and overly bright colors as a color accent, e.g. for decorative trims, tie-backs, or other upholstery within the room.

Once you bought that Christmas tree you’ve been planning since the last Christmas (which didn’t turn out as you wished for), the next step is to make sure this Christmas tree will last up until that very day and hopefully another 12 more days later.

Caring for Christmas tree is not at all daunting and difficult as you might think. Sure, it does need some TLC but it’s not much different from caring your everyday plants.

Firstly, Christmas trees take in a lot of water to prevent their needles from drying and dropping off, and boughs from dropping. It also helps keep the tree fragrant.

Next, keep the base of the tree filled to the brim with water to keep it alive; or pack the base with ice cubes. If the water level drops below the base of the tree, a seal of dried sap will form over the cut stump in four to six hours, preventing the tree from absorbing water later when the tree stand is refilled. If a seal does form, another fresh cut will need to be made.

It’s always a good idea to add anti-mosquito granules to the water although it doesn’t help the tree to look good but you don’t want to be breeding mosquito during this festival season or any day at all.

Lastly, trees require daily misting to keep them fresh.

Four Basic Decorating Tips For Your Christmas Tree

Put lights on first, then the garlands, then the ornaments. Doing it this way gives you a better idea of how your tree will turn out, and you can plan where the ornaments should go.

Hang some ornaments on the inside of the tree and not just on the ends of the branches, to give the decor some depth.

Begin by hanging filler ornaments, such as baubles, before adding more unusual ones. As a rough guide, you need about 20 filler ornaments for every 2ft of tree.

Use real flowers such as orchids and roses as decorations. This way, you can change the “ornaments” every week, keeping it fresh and interesting.
