There are many reasons to focus our attention on energy conservation. First and foremost, the rising cost of energy gives us a great financial rationale to decrease energy use. Also the growing concern over the role our use of energy resources may play in significant existing and potential future environmental problems which gives us more reason to re-examine our use of energy.

There are many easy and relatively inexpensive steps most people can take in order to decrease their energy use. There are three simple household gadgets, for example, that can result in impressive energy savings.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs: Fluorescent lights were once considered only for office and large building settings due to their size. Relatively recent innovations, however, have resulted in the mass production of compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs provide a great alternative to the usual incandescent bulb we often use.

Fluorescent bulbs are not only longer-lasting than their traditional counterparts, they also us a lot less energy. Every bulb is likely to create an energy savings of thirty to sixty dollars during its lifespan. The slightly higher up front cost of fluorescent bulbs is more than compensated for by these significant savings.

Those whose motivation for conservation rests in concern for the environment should embrace the fluorescent bulb. One estimate states that each fluorescent used in place of a regular bulb will prevent nearly one half ton of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. These bulbs are another easy, no-hassle way to improve our energy use.

Water Heater Blankets: Specially-fitted insulated water heater covers, also known as water heater blankets, provide a great low-effort way of conserving energy. By protecting and insulating the heater, less energy is required to heat water to the desired temperature. In addition, these blankets also help the water heater to maintain appropriate water temperature without requiring frequent energy-burning warm-ups.

The water heater blanket’s appeal is in its simplicity. By just covering one energy-using device, a household can post great energy savings. Water heaters are one of the most energy-intensive appliances in any home, and one should target them for increased conservation whenever possible. Water heater blankets are one great way to increase efficiency in this area.

Low Flow Faucets and Shower-heads: Believe it or not, we send a great deal of energy down the drain every single day—literally. By overusing heated water, we waste energy. You can give your water heater a break and decrease your energy use significantly by replacing existing faucets and shower-heads with water-saving low-flow alternatives. For those who are not interested in doing too much plumbing, special aerators are available for many faucet types that will help decrease water use. Our waste of hot water may not be completely stopped with these gadgets, but it will be decreased.

The low-flow solution has a few other benefits, too. Not only you save energy costs and being more environmentally friendly in terms of heating energy, you also save on your water bill and increase conservation of an important natural resource. Low-flow attachments are a great way to conserve and prosper on multiple levels and should be considered for any home.

In conclusion, the above three energy conservation solutions demonstrate how easy it is to save money and resources inexpensively. None of these items will cost a fortune or require considerable time or expense installation. Simple adjustments can make a big difference in a long run.

More conservation friendly products like these do not constitute a complete solution to our over-use of energy. Even if many techniques of this sort are “stacked,” more could be done. However, every gain—even the smallest incremental improvement—can have a real impact on our family’s bottom line. Small adjustments like these can result in significant financial savings and will at least contribute to a better environment for everyone.

The next time you happen to be in a hardware store or are out shopping for light bulbs, remember some of the simple purchases you can make that will actually be energy-saving investments once put to use.

Colors for bedroom can work wonders, especially when they serve dual purposes—to coax you to sleep at night and to perk you up first thing in the morning. Here are some basic bedroom colors ideas on how to utilize them to your advantages and benefits:

Basic Bedroom Colors Ideas

Bedroom Wall Colors: A bright yellow may seem a cherry choice but seeing it in large amount over a long period of time, especially in a room you relax in, may not be a great idea. Go for golden yellow instead as it symbolizes sunrise or green for a more soothing effect. Pink and peach, if they aren’t too girly for you, are also warm and inviting.

Wardrobe Colors: Cabinets take up quite a bit of space in the bedroom, so only go for dark colored wardrobes if you have a well-lit room. Otherwise you may end up having a gloomy feel in the bedroom.

Bedsheets Colors: Bedsheets can serve as a focal point of your bedroom. Choose one that will set the color scheme for the bedroom. If you use a comforter, buy a reversible duvet cover for versatility. If your bed is big enough, throw in extra pillow in coordinated shades for cuddly comfort and extra strokes of colors.

Most people would not regard lighting as part of bedroom color scheme nevertheless it does create an impact on the overall feel if you choose the wrong lighting color. So avoid lights that are too bright in the bedroom. Go for bulbs with a lower wattage emitting warm yellow lights. This will give a more soothing ambience to the bedroom.

Stuck in a career rut? Unsettled in your love life? According to the ancient Chinese philosophy of feng shui, the root of your problems could lie with the design of your home or an imbalance in the core elements (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) of your life. Before you brush off these claims as mumbo jumbo, know that today’s feng shui converts include famous names like Donald Trump and Oprah Winfrey.

What Is Feng Shui?

Taken literally, feng shui means wind and water in Mandarin, two of the five elements in feng shui. In essence, it examines how the placement of every day objects affect the flow of chi (the universal life-force energy) in your environment, which in turn influences your personal energy flow and affect how you perform and succeed personally and professionally.

Fundamental Feng Shui Tips For Your Home

As its core, Feng Shui is about how your surroundings can affect your physical and mental health, your relationships, and your worldly success.

Clean Living: To promote good flow of chi in your home, the easiest thing to do is to declutter. A consistent flow of healthy natural energy not only enhances creativity and improves an individual’s well-being and relationships, it also promotes wealth, prosperity, and abundance.

Balancing Lifestyle: The fundamentals of feng shui relate to balancing your environment. This is achieved using the metaphysical laws of nature—known as the yin and yang—and the five elements: metal, water, wood, fire, and earth. By each itself, none of the seven elements is neither good nor bad. These elements will only “turn against” you when we have too much of one of the elements in our home, and our life will become out of sync.

Basic Symbolism of the Seven Elements:

Yin: Darkness, Cold, Damp. Passive, Black

Yang: Light, Warm, Dry, Active, Yellow, White

Metal: Electrical gadgets, metallic fixtures, Gray, Silver

Water: Bathroom. Fountains, fish tank, Blue, Gray

Wood: Wooden furniture, Doors, Brown

Fire: Stove. Red, Orange

Earth: Stone. Garden. Orange. Dark Yellow

Ward Off Negatives: To keep negative energy at bay, avoid homes with long, narrow corridors, dark corners or steep stairways or at least keep them to a very minimum. For example, you could add light fixtures in dark corners of the house or break the continuous long corridors by placing a “divider” (i.e side table, floor vase) in between.

Water Enhances Wealth and Luck: Water, an important element in feng shui, is often associated with fortune, intelligence, and wisdom. For some, well-placed water features in the home can enhance luck cycles and bring wealth. However, any body of water, be it in a cup or fish tank, should be clean and not murky.

The above ares general feng shui tips. To define your feng shui energy map or to balance the five elements in special corners of your home, please consult a professional feng shui master.

When designing a home theater that works one aspect that needs careful consideration is the lighting. Lighting designers classify lighting into three main categories.

Task lighting: Task lighting is exactly what it seems to be; it is the lighting needed when one has to do something. An example of task lighting is the lamp that garnishes your desk.

Accent lighting: Accent lighting is used for accenting architectural or favorite displays of a room.

Ambient lighting: This is the filler. It is the light that fills every corner of the room. These should all be in a relative balance for a room to “work.” Light has a major significance to people.

When considering lighting for a theater room many different angels should be addressed. You don’t want a light that will cast a glare, but still needs enough light to make maneuverings possible. The room that one wants to create should be inviting. It should be comfortable to every one no matter the endeavor they would like to pursue.

Before You Buy Those Lighting For Your Home Theater

Think about what you want to do before you purchase anything. Know what effect you want to evoke in every inch of the room. Next pick your fixtures. These come in all shapes, sizes, color, and wattage. Visualize where a person will be seated in the room and consider what type of light is best for that particular spot.

Putting The Lights At Their Right Places

During the viewing of a movie you don’t want to be in total darkness. This creates an environment restrict the ability of movement and creates eyestrain. There are interesting ways to combat this with still casting the illusion of little light. Wall sconces, for example, create low light that is enough to diminish eyestrain. They can be positioned all around a room. Mounted on walls along the baseboards or even from the ceiling. The key to having a combination of perfect lighting is making sure that all light can be controlled. Try to set no more than three lights to a specific switch. This will enable a person to have the perfect lighting for what ever occasion.

There are many professionals along the lines of lighting. If you have questions don’t hesitate to ask for advice. It is important to get this right. And most are willing to assist the “do it yourself” without any cost.

One of the expenses that can really start to add up in your home is the utilities, specifically electricity. Often we neglect to realize that we have control of how much this costs us each month. Just making a few changes can really impact your electricity bill each month. It might take a little more energy or using an extra blanket, but keep in mind how much you will be saving. These minor changes will really add up.

Lighting: Firstly, install the new type of fluorescent bulbs in lights you leave on for extended time periods. They provide about four times as much light and last times longer than incandescent bulbs. This can add up to a savings of about $10-$50/year.

Heating System: Try lowering the temperature on your hot water heater to between 110 and 120 degrees. It’s not necessary to have it any hotter and wastes energy. Cut back on the long, hot showers, this can really add up.

Temperature Setting: Set the thermostat no higher than 68 degrees in winter and no lower than 78 degrees in summer. Turn your heat down even further at night and when you’re not home (unless you have a heat pump, which operates more efficiently at one consistent setting). Each extra degree in winter can increase heating costs by 3%. In summer, each degree can raise cooling costs by about 6%. This can add up to about $325 to $500/year.

Laundry Dryer: Try to cut back on the use of your clothes dryer. Not only is it a big energy drain, it can also suck heated air out of your house very quickly in winter. Hang clothes outside or on a clothes rack to dry and use the dryer for towels and other heavier items. This will amount to a savings of around $25-50/year.

Cooking: When cooking up a meal, use your microwave when possible instead of your oven, which can save up to 50% in energy costs for cooking. There is a potential savings of about $50/year.

Finally, find out if your utility company offers free energy audits, where they inspect your home for energy effectiveness and recommend inexpensive ways to cut energy costs, such as insulating hot water heaters, weather-stripping, etc. Just insulating your hot water heater could save you $25 a year.

Lighting For Flowering Plants

Moderate bright light is key to keeping flowering plants happy and healthy.

If the light is poor, flowering plants flower less, develop spindly shoots, yellow leaves, poor color, and little or no growth.

Avoid facing your plants towards direct sunlight. This causes the flowers to over heat and collapse.

In an average lit room, try to keep flowering plants close to the windows.

Fluorescent lights placed about one foot above the top of the plant can help improve growth.

Lighting For Foliage Plants

It is trickier to gauge how much light is needed for foliage plants, as suitable light intensities can range from low to moderate and high.

Generally, most foliage plants prefer daylight without the blast of direct sunlight, or sunlight diffused through a lightweight curtain.

Very few foliage plants can live in low lit interiors.

If you’re constantly shifting your plants about, these abrupt changes can be damaging, as plants can get acclimatized to a particular location. For example, if the leaves are growing towards the direction of the light in low lit areas, moving the plant will disrupt its orientation and absorption of light.

Shift your plants gradually. To avoid one-sided growth, simply turn the pots once a week.
