There are many reasons to focus our attention on energy conservation. First and foremost, the rising cost of energy gives us a great financial rationale to decrease energy use. Also the growing concern over the role our use of energy resources may play in significant existing and potential future environmental problems which gives us more reason to re-examine our use of energy.

There are many easy and relatively inexpensive steps most people can take in order to decrease their energy use. There are three simple household gadgets, for example, that can result in impressive energy savings.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs: Fluorescent lights were once considered only for office and large building settings due to their size. Relatively recent innovations, however, have resulted in the mass production of compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs provide a great alternative to the usual incandescent bulb we often use.

Fluorescent bulbs are not only longer-lasting than their traditional counterparts, they also us a lot less energy. Every bulb is likely to create an energy savings of thirty to sixty dollars during its lifespan. The slightly higher up front cost of fluorescent bulbs is more than compensated for by these significant savings.

Those whose motivation for conservation rests in concern for the environment should embrace the fluorescent bulb. One estimate states that each fluorescent used in place of a regular bulb will prevent nearly one half ton of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. These bulbs are another easy, no-hassle way to improve our energy use.

Water Heater Blankets: Specially-fitted insulated water heater covers, also known as water heater blankets, provide a great low-effort way of conserving energy. By protecting and insulating the heater, less energy is required to heat water to the desired temperature. In addition, these blankets also help the water heater to maintain appropriate water temperature without requiring frequent energy-burning warm-ups.

The water heater blanket’s appeal is in its simplicity. By just covering one energy-using device, a household can post great energy savings. Water heaters are one of the most energy-intensive appliances in any home, and one should target them for increased conservation whenever possible. Water heater blankets are one great way to increase efficiency in this area.

Low Flow Faucets and Shower-heads: Believe it or not, we send a great deal of energy down the drain every single day—literally. By overusing heated water, we waste energy. You can give your water heater a break and decrease your energy use significantly by replacing existing faucets and shower-heads with water-saving low-flow alternatives. For those who are not interested in doing too much plumbing, special aerators are available for many faucet types that will help decrease water use. Our waste of hot water may not be completely stopped with these gadgets, but it will be decreased.

The low-flow solution has a few other benefits, too. Not only you save energy costs and being more environmentally friendly in terms of heating energy, you also save on your water bill and increase conservation of an important natural resource. Low-flow attachments are a great way to conserve and prosper on multiple levels and should be considered for any home.

In conclusion, the above three energy conservation solutions demonstrate how easy it is to save money and resources inexpensively. None of these items will cost a fortune or require considerable time or expense installation. Simple adjustments can make a big difference in a long run.

More conservation friendly products like these do not constitute a complete solution to our over-use of energy. Even if many techniques of this sort are “stacked,” more could be done. However, every gain—even the smallest incremental improvement—can have a real impact on our family’s bottom line. Small adjustments like these can result in significant financial savings and will at least contribute to a better environment for everyone.

The next time you happen to be in a hardware store or are out shopping for light bulbs, remember some of the simple purchases you can make that will actually be energy-saving investments once put to use.

The astronomically high distance of the Sun from the Earth is not a limiting factor to help you use the massively untapped source of energy—Solar power. Yes, just a fraction of the sun’s total energy hits the earth and yet it is more than sufficient to meet your power requirements. Solar power is the safe and economic alternative for energy. All you have to use this free energy resource is to harness the solar energy in a proper manner so that you can use it to meet your power needs.

Companies Offering Solar Power Solutions

Okay, you too would like to use the solar power for your domestic or commercial applications. However, you need know about the leading companies and solution providers in the solar energy industry. There are two categories of companies providing solar power solutions. One are the companies that provide the system and hardware for generating solar energy on your own and the other that use solar power commercially and then sell you a clean form of energy.

You may want to get the power just like a utility and avoid using shingles or heavy and bulky solar panels at your home.

Green Mountain Energy Company is just the right company for meeting your clean solar power needs. The company buys power that is produced from wind, sun, water, biomass, geothermal and natural gas. Thereafter the company puts the power into the regional power grids for supplying to users like you. The company provides you a cleaner power but you still have to pay the utility bills and the power is not as clean as when you would be generating solar power on your own. This is the reason why you would need to look for solar power providers who provide you the equipment and technology to generate solar power on your own.

When we talk about solar power providers, we are referring to manufacturers and installers of solar energy systems. Here is some information about a few leading companies offering solar power solutions.

Two Leading Solar Power Companies Offering Solar Power Solutions

BP Solar Company is the industry leader in solar power solutions. BP Solar provides solar energy for residential, industrial, and commercial users. BP Solar is one of the largest providers of simplified solar energy systems with complete installation for many homeowners.

General Electric is another big company offering Solar Power solutions. GE provides high-end commercial solutions and custom-made solutions that use crystallized silicon for solar power devices. General Electric is a renowned name in providing pre-packaged solar power solutions for homeowners.

Uni-Solar

These two leading companies providing solar power solutions would be incomplete without a reference of Uni-Solar. Uni-Solar has launched a breakthrough in the solar power generation with the launch of solar roof shingles. The solar roof shingles can be placed on the roof just like the normal roof shingles. By using these solar roof shingles, you can avoid the inconvenience of using bulky solar panel appliances.

Besides, there are many local providers in all areas that provide supply and installation services for solar power modules for domestic and commercial applications.

Solar power is the future of power and the best alternative source of energy. The importance of solar power is primarily because it is a clean and renewable source of energy. You may have come across calculators and watches that operate without any batteries and do not have any off button. These devices work as long as there is enough sunlight. These are some of the very smallest applications of solar power in our daily life. Not only this, you may have also found large solar panels placed in the parking lots to power the lights. Satellites also have solar cell arrays that are used to supply power to the electrical systems.

What Is Solar Energy Panel?

Before we understand about the solar energy panels, let us understand what solar power is. Solar power is the energy harnessed from sunlight. Technically speaking, solar power is the use of sunlight for converting it into electrical energy. This process of conversion of sunlight into electrical energy is achieved with the use of solar photovoltaic panels or solar cells. You can place these cells also known as solar energy cells on the roof of a room, or even the roof of a garage to harness solar power for lighting, heating, or any other application.

How Solar Energy Panel Works?

Solar energy panels play a vital role in converting sunlight to electricity. The solar panel collects energy from the sunlight and converts it into direct current (DC) electricity. The next question is that how does a solar panel work? In a solar energy cell, two slices of silicon are placed under the glass. The two slices of silicon are oppositely charged. The protons of the sunlight knock the negatively charged neutrons and put them away from the silicon. The neutrons are then attracted by the electric field that is created by the two pieces of silicon. These neutrons are further trapped by small pieces of wire and generate electricity. The electricity thus produced is direct current or DC. Thereafter an inverter is used to convert this DC power into AC current. You can use the AC current for your .

DIY Solar Energy Homes

You will be amazed to find that the home improvement stores are increasing the solar powered goods both in quantity and in quality. Garden lighting is now-a-days making use of solar panels. Not only this, the domestic use of solar energy is much in vogue. You can heat the water in the swimming pool or you can get water heating in your hot water boiler using solar panels. Solar panels also provide an opportunity to provide electricity to the entire house using solar panels.

Most of the solar powered goods are readily available with the home improvement stores or the electronics stores. These items/goods are relatively quite reasonable in cost. So do not wait and use the untapped solar power for your home and save substantially on your power bills.

Solar power is a safe and popular alternative source of energy. In simple words, solar power refers to the energy generated from sunlight. There are different methods for harnessing solar energy for your day-to-day needs.

Traditionally, solar Power has been used as an alternative source of energy in the traditional building methods. In the recent years, there is increased interest and talk about the benefits of solar power. The enhanced interest in solar power is because of two reasons. One is the rising energy bills, depleting fossil fuel reserves, and second the environmental degradation caused because of burning fossil fuels.

Solar power addresses both the concerns quite well because it uses sunlight for generating energy, which is available free, and safe for the environment. This is the reason why many domestic and commercial establishments are switching to solar power to meet their energy requirements. Moreover, solar power is of great use for the remote locations where you do not have conventional sources of power. Solar power is also widely used by owners of Recreational Vehicles (RV) and luxury boats.

Solar Power For Houses

Solar power is being noticed for its widespread use at homes. Solar powered lights are quite common for garden lighting and some people are using it even for indoor lighting. Solar power is undoubtedly a viable energy source for your home because it has no recurring cost and a very low rather negligible maintenance cost.

Photovoltaic Tiles For Your Home

The only concern regarding the use of solar power is the bulky size of solar panels. However, this concern has also been addressed largely with the development of small solar photovoltaic cells and the solar photovoltaic roof shingles. The solar photovoltaic roof shingles or tiles look quite similar to your normal roof shingles and provide you the freedom from large solar panels.

You can use of photovoltaic tiles to supply electrical power for your home use. This electrical power can be used to heat water, and even heat your house. Some people also use solar power to heat the pool. The solar power generated by the PV shingles is just like the normal power you use for your everyday needs.

Solar Water Pumps

Solar power is being used to power water pumps in remote areas. Although windmills were the main source of power for the water pumps but recently the solar power is becoming the preferred source.

The government provides grants to for purchase and installation of solar power devices such as solar energy panels and solar photovoltaic singles. Using solar power entails double a benefit as you are not only preventing environmental damage but also you are also cutting down your electricity bills. If you are not able to use solar power for your house on your own, you still have the option of buying the solar power from the grid.

The photovoltaic tile is made up of a positive and negative silicon slices that are placed under a slice of glass. The protons of sunlight knock the neutrons off the silicon when they hit the PV cells. The silicon then attracts the free neutrons that are negatively charged. The free neutrons are further trapped by the magnetic field formed as result of the opposite fields. The small silicon wires catch the free neutrons. These free neutrons form an electric current when they are connected in a circuit.

This produces electricity in the form of Direct Current (DC). The DC electricity is further passed through an inverter to convert into an Alternating Current (AC). The AC current is used for power in our homes and other applications.

The advantage of using a PV cell is that it requires little or no maintenance. A typical PV cell has the capability to last up to 40 years with very minor maintenance. This feature is making solar energy amazingly popular power alternative.

The importance of harnessing solar power is more in the wake of impending power crisis and pollution cause by other sources of energy. Solar Power is the best renewable source of energy that can be used in various forms.

Uses of Solar Power in Homes

Solar power has the capability to power your home. Many gardens use solar energy in the form of solar light or solar garden water features. The efficient use of solar power in gardens proves that it is a very versatile source of energy.

Advantage and Disadvantage Of Solar Power Home System

Disadvantage: The major drawback of solar power was the size of solar panels. However, new technology has made the systems compact and much better look wise. In California, the solar power is being used since the 1980’s to provide power to more than 10 million homes.

Advantage: Many other developed countries have are also using solar power. The advantage of solar power is its almost cost free operation. Solar power has just one time installation expense and the running cost is just zero because you need not pay anything for the sunrays that are required to generate solar power.

Another Advantage: With technological advancement it has become possible to store solar power and use it in the night when you do not have the sunrays. The energy from an average sized Solar power unit can be used to power a 17” TV, a fan and a radio. It can be a good source of sufficient electric lighting system for up to 10 hours.

One of the most used utilities in our house is water. All the showers, laundry, cleaning, and drinking really add up and it shows when the bill comes every month. So, you ask, how can I easily cut back the expenses on my water bill? Let me show you how these few…

Easy Tips To Help You Save $300 a year on Water Bills

Before your next…

Laundry: Try to do full loads of laundry. A typical full load usually uses about 21 gallons of water. A small load uses 14 gallons. Several small loads use considerable more water than one or two large loads. Over the course of a year, this can add up to a savings of about $25-$125 a year.

Add fabric softener to your laundry at the appropriate point in the cycle instead of adding at the end and rinsing clothes again, which can use up to 10 extra gallons of water. Figure out how much time it takes for the washer to reach the rinse cycle, and set a timer so you can add softener at the right time.

Rather than always using hot water in your laundry, use warm or cold water for washing clothes, and always rinse in cold water, which can save you around $50/year.

Dish Washing: Similarly, run your dishwasher only when you have a full load. Allow the dishes to air dry instead of using the heat cycle. Try to place dishes appropriately in the washer so that they get cleaned appropriately. This will prevent having to re-wash some dishes because they are still dirty. An average dishwasher costs about $60 to $100 per year to run. By waiting to clean until it is full, you can save from $35-$55/year.

If you eat alone most of the time, better yet, wash your dishes by hand. But don’t wash them under running water throughout. You not only cutting down your water expenses in addition you also save on your electrical bills.

Bath: Install flow restricting shower heads. A family of four can save 8,000 to 12,000 gallons of water a year from this simple change. You will not only save on the cost of water, but also the cost of heating it.

Toileting: Always try to fix running toilets or leaky faucets promptly. A continuously running toilet can use more than 8,000 gallons of water a year. This can generate from $25-$125/year.

Making these simple changes adds up to a big difference overall. You’ll be pleased to see your water bills decreasing instead of going up each month!

A bachelor friend of mine who recently invited me to his newly-reconstructed bungalow home for a private viewing. He had it constructed a high ceiling and orientated to encourage maximum flow of fresh air.It worked because I sat in the living room on a hot afternoon feeling quite cool despite there being no fans nor air conditioning on.

It seemed the perfect house for those who want airy living places that don’t want to waste vast quantities of electricity just to keep air circulating. It was in fact perfect for him living there, but it was too bright for my tastes as it admitted too much light.

What You Should Consider Before Recreating Your Breezy Home

I don’t hate sunlight with a vengeance just not keen of being constantly exposed too much of it. The flip side of an airy home, besides no privacy, is that it bounds to let in too much light. To keep air moving, there must be access points like open windows or doors where breezes can enter, and exit points at the other end of the house. Otherwise there won’t be much flow of fresh air indoors.

1. Blinds and Curtains

Unfortunately, open doors and windows let sunlight in. Thin breathable curtains are insufficient protection for those who can’t tolerate even indirect sunlight, because they let rays through. Only opaque, lined curtains will do, but air hardly gets past.

Blinds are solution if they can be angled so that the wind blows easily through, but nary a ray peeps in.

Not fond of blinds and still want to keep the sun out and air moving? Open your windows, hang light curtains, and position sturdy opaque screens between the window and yourself. Sturdiness is crucial as winds can send a screen crashing down in your room, smashing ornaments and itself.

2. Solar Skylights

If you are a sun worshipper, then by all means throw your windows and doors open to the wind, and consider installing a Solar Skylight too. It’s an electricity-saving device that helps draw hot air out through your ceiling and roof via a flexible tube, and also lets sunlight and fresh air in while being unobtrusive in appearance.

However, it is feasible mainly for houses, and only single-storey ones or for the top floor of two- or three-storey houses.

3. Insect Problems

Letting fresh air circulate freely may mean that some undesirable guests like mosquitoes, flies, and cockroaches blow in with the breeze too.

Well designed insect screens let air in and keep bugs out, but those that are woven too densely may keep air out too, so install with caution. Put them up over the windows of just one room first and see how it goes before you do the whole house.

A slightly old fashioned but pretty alternative is a white lace screen that is attached firmly to your window frame. Do ensure that you and the store you buy the material from devise a way of removing or parting them with minimal fuss for cleaning and access to your windows.

4. Busted By Dust

A constant breeze blowing through your home also introduces dust, depositing it in corners and on your furnishings. The above mentioned insect and lace screens can limit this problem somewhat, but not completely as dust particles are microscopic.

Other than getting a good vacuum cleaner or an industrious housekeeper, or creating dust traps like pools and ponds between your house and the wind, there is not a whole lot you can do to fight dust if you want air to enter freely.

To a certain extent, dust is minimized if your home is on a high floor—insect don’t come that thick and fast either.

So do let fresh air into your home, but be aware it’s not always a breeze!
